How Acupuncture Entered My Life
A question that keeps popping up
As HONEYWOLF Acupuncture grows, I have noticed that folks are asking me the same question, "How did you get into Acupuncture?" . The answer is not surprising but rather practical . I was having pain and the normal routes like PT , lidocaine injections , and rest were not helping . This is not to say they don't help, but that in my case I was still in pain after doing the work. I did not want to rely on things like medication , I just wanted to get better. Enter acupuncture.
My friends have the best ideas
One of my friends said , hey have you tried Acupuncture? It's amazing and I swear by it. My friend, who is one of the most hardworking people in the restaurant business, has had their fair share of painful conditions and experiences . If they said it was good I'm was going to follow their lead and check it out.
In my first session I had no idea what to expect. The acupuncture spot was easy to get to, small but the office had a great vibe. When I met my acupuncturist we clicked right away which I took as a good sign. He knew his stuff especially body mechanics and how to improve the pain I was feeling . I honestly thought I was in for another round of several months of treatment to get this pain down but after I got off the table that first time my pain went from an 8 to a 2 in an hour. Well that's all I needed, and I was hooked. Now, looking back I know that I should have had more sessions out of the gate because I was dealing with an acute problem. I was booking biweekly which is not the end of the world but I'm sure that I could have felt even better even faster with more sessions in the beginning ( look for a future post on Acu frequency and conditions) .
As I continued acupuncture, the pain decreased more and more and the range of motion returned . I also noticed other benefits to acupuncture, like my sleep, digestion and mood improved ,my periods weren't as painful and happened on the reg. What I didn't know at the time is how acupuncture treats not just the symptoms you experience but it gets to the root of your issues. It promotes balance in the body which leads to a happier healthier you.
Frustration made me do it
As the depth of my acu experience and knowledge grew , my frustration with traditional western medicine did too. Why are western practitioners not partnering in prevention with the Eastern practitioners ? Why do I know so many people who are on medicine just to treat the side effects of another, and they still feel like crap? All this triggered in me a desire to do more for people . I decided to go back to school for my Master's degree in Acupuncture. Yes it was hard , but when I began to practice as an acupuncturist and I had patients that were getting back to their lives it made it worth it. Now, let's be real, there is no magic wand I am wielding, and acu cannot cure everything . I still believe in Western medicine and kinda love things like vaccines, and antibiotics and lifesaving procedures and screenings. I also love the focus of East Asian medicine, to look at the whole person, to restore balance and to help improve the quality of life. We are all going through the human experience so why not do it feeling your best?
How it Started Vs How it's Going
What started as me not taking care of myself and pushing myself to injury soon became a journey into healing and an acceptance that the Western care model isn't the only path out there. Preventative medicine means getting a person to a point where their health is in check and things don't go wrong . If they do go wrong the body has what it needs to battle or rest and heal. I'm not saying everyone has to go to acupuncture then become an acupuncturist , but if you haven't tried acupuncture and you are curious I am here to help. I am a total nerd for this medicine and would love to geek out as much or as little as you want to. The point is that acupuncture can help with a wide array of things from pain to allergies, to brainfog, to colds. Want to learn more? Look for an upcoming workshop, email me or book a session. I'll be waiting to hear your acupuncture story .
XOXO,
Mel
